Anyone Coming to Hickory to Avoid Flu Will Be Arrested and Imprisoned, Oct. 5, 1918

“City to Enforce Quarantine Strictly,” from The Monroe Journal, Hickory, N.C., Saturday, Oct. 5, 1918. Spanish flu may not be a problem in Hickory but if you are exposed to the flu and come into town, you will be arrested and imprisoned.

City council at a conference today took steps to prevent the spread of Spanish influenza here by ordering the arrest of all persons who come in from the work camps to escape the disease. In scores of cases the influenza has been traced to these camps, it is asserted, and the authorities are determined to protect the people of Hickory. All persons who have been exposed to the disease are requested to remain at their homes on pain of being arrested and imprisoned under the quarantine ordinance.
