Lt. Culbreth, Pvts. Mattis, Riddle, Walters Killed in France, 1918

“Today’s Casualty List,” from the Hickory Daily Record, Oct. 7, 1918. The Record was a daily, but like many small daily newspapers of its time, it did not publish on Sundays.

Washington, Oct. 7—Total number of casualties, including those announced Sunday but not those announced today, were 40,671. In the number 7,990 were killed in action, including 291 who were lost at sea; 2,586 died of wounds, 1,992 died of disease, 960 died of accident and other causes, 21,922 were wounded in action, 5,221 were missing in action, including prisoners.

The two lists issued today contained a total of 744 names and Sunday’s list contained 761 names. The following are reported from North Carolina:
