Confederate Veterans Singing and Shouting Rebel Yells Round Campfires at Salem College, Sept. 5, 1923

900 Vets at the Reunion

Winston-Salem, Sept. 4—The first day’s session of the 16th annual reuion of the North Cariolna Confederate Veterans terminated at 7:30 this evening with over 900 members gathered around camp fires on the Salem College square and shouting “rebel yells,” singing songs that brought back memories of the days of ’61-65 and conversing about their experiences n the days that tried men’s nerves.

The historic Salem square took on the aspect of regimental headquarters. Camp fires were reproduced by electrical contrivances, tents were pitched about the lawn and guns and military aparphernalia were scattered around to give a real wartime appearance.

Songs of the confederacy were played by the United States army band from Camp Bragg and sung by the men who wore the gray.

Up to tonight over 1,000 veterans had registered for the reunion, this being 250 more than had been predicted would attend.
