Barton Boy Studying Auto Mechanics in Honolulu, Oct. 2, 1923

Murphy Boy Now in Honolulu

Word has been received by the relatives of Gay Barton that he is enjoying the best of health and life in Honolulu. Part of young Barton’s letter is as follows:

“After leaving Murphy, I went to Fort Bragg the largest Army Post in the world where I stayed about two weeks, and from there I went to New York to set sale for the Hawaiian Islands. I stayed in the big city about a week. From New York, where se set sail, we took one of Uncle Sam’s large boats. Our next top was down in Panama. After taking on coal, we left for the Island, landing their about 20 days after sailing from New York.

We sure did have some trip down, but that was no trip at all, as I have made some trips around the islands and that has got it beat to death. This is some place—like the place that we read about when we were going to school. This is some place for fruit, any kind that you want, and swimming—well I staying the water just about half the time. My body and I always go down and take a swim right after school. I am going to a school to learn to be an auto mechanic. You can tell any of [the guys…my friends?] to pay me a visit, they can do so by enlisting in the army.”
