Evan M. Johnson Has Died in Paris, France, Oct. 14, 1923

Scotland Neck, Oct. 13—General Evan M. Johnson, commander of the 77th division in France during the world war, died this morning in Paris, according to a cablegram received by his daughter, Mrs. W.O. McDowell, of this place.

The body, it is thought by relatives here, will be brought to America and buried in Arlington cemetery.

Surviving General Johnson are one son, Evan M. Johnson Jr., Moore, Pa.; and two daughters, Mrs. McDowell of this place and Mrs. A. Dravo, Fort Benning, Ga.

News Received of Soldier’s Death. . . Was Brigadier General in World War

Washington, Oct. 13—Evan M. Johnson, news of whose death in Paris was received here today, numbered among the army officers who attained high command from the ranks. He enlisted in the army as a private in 1882 at the age of 21. Three years later he was appointed a second lieutenant. During the Spanish-American war he attained the rank of major and was retained in the regular service. In the meantime he had seen service in the Indian campaigns.

He attended several army schools and for three years was instructor in military science and tactics at Mt. Union college. His world war commands included the 154th infantry brigade, the 77th and 79th divisions and the 158th brigade. In 1919 he was military attaché in Rome, Italy. He was a member of the descendants of colonial governors, the Loyal Legion and the Sons of the American republic. Johnson was born in Brooklyn in 1861. He held the rank of brigadier general in the world war and later as a colonel in the regular army. He was retired January 1, 1922, at his own request.
