Spencer—The Spencer High school building was destroyed by fire, entailing a loss of approximately $50,000, with insurance to cover and crippling other educational institutions in the city through loss of the central heating system located in the burned building.
Rev. R.O. Eller, pastor of the Central Methodist church, suffered a badly mashed hand when he was caught under falling debris. A Mrs. Johnson suffered minor injuries in a fall while trying to escape from the crowds, and E.P. McSwain, superintendent of schools, suffered a collapse after inhaling smoke while assisting in fighting the fire.
Smoke was first discovered issuing from the basement of the doomed building. Firemen, who arrived on the scene promptly, suffered a loss of a half hour in time while trying to locate the blaze. The departments of Spencer, East Spencer and Salisbury combined in fighting the fire. The new automobile trucks of the Spencer department were used for the first time.
The high and elementary schools of Spencer will be out of commission for some time because of the destruction of the heating plant. The churches of the city are said to have offered their houses of worship for the use of the schools while other arrangements are being perfected.
