Sandhill Citizens to Remind Highway Commission of Its Plan to Pave Through N.C., April 3, 1925

Working for Route 50. . . Chamber of Commerce Sends Delegation to Raleigh to Fight for Hard Surface

An interested group of about 100 representative citizens of Southern Pines met at the School Auditorium on Monday night at the invitation of the Chamber of Commerce and had the pleasure of hearing Senator Charles A. Harris of Raleigh speak on the improbability of the State Highway Commission approving Hard Surface for any part of Route 50 in the immediate future unless a vigorous pressure is brought to bear on the Commission by the various towns along the route.

The meeting was called to order by President Lewis of the Chamber of Commerce, who in a few words stated the object of the meeting and then called upon Frank Ray to introduce the speaker of the evening. Mr. Ray presented Mr. Harris in a pleasing manner and the Senator from Raleigh made a fine impression on his audience from the start. He is an earnest and convincing speaker and in a short half hour, he convinced every person in the room of the necessity for the people who live along Route 50 to make a concerted drive on the Highway Commission to have them carry out their original intention of building two Main Highways across the State, Route 10, East and West, and Route 50, North and South.

Senator Harris made an urgent plea for the Chamber of Commerce to send a strong delegation to Raleigh this Thursday to make an appeal to the Highway Commission to carry out their original intention of establishing Route 50 as a through North and South Trunk Highway across the state. At the close of his remarks the question of sending a delegation to Raleigh was discussed, and judging from the interest shown, a good-sized delegation of Southern Pines folks will journey to Raleigh today to appear before the Highway Commission.
