CORBOY, COACH

F.B. Corboy, known to the students as “Coach,” is the man that makes a machine form a set of individuals. A victory in victory and a gentleman in defeat, he has won a high place in he esteem of those whom he has coached and those teams with which his teams have matched strength.

KIRKLAND, HALF BACK

T.L. Kirkland, known as “Chubby,” is back and on the squad with his same fighting spirit. He is a welcome asset to the squad this year and if his playing has suffered no set-back from last year’s absence, he is assured of his old berth on the team.

HARRELL, HALF BACK

D.L. Harrell Jr., popularly known as “Lem”, is just beginning his third year with the team, and if he proves true tohis past record, he will make himself well known to our opponents. Last year, very unfortunately, Lem suffered a dislocated elbow which put him out of the game for half of the season, but he is back as well and sound as ever now.

Coach Corboys’ call for football candidates brought back to the campus a determined bunch of men. They came with the determination to make this a red letter year in Elon’s athletic story. It is a bit early in the season to size the team up with any amount of certainty. It is, however, easy to say that the prospects are very much better than they were last year, when the Coach started off with a mere handful of old men to make a team.

Practice began in real earnest last ?? and up to the day of matriculation, practice was held twice daily. By Saturday afternoon there were about ?? men on the field. Others came Monday and by Tuesday football practice had taken on a real business-like aspect.

It is with regret that we report the captain-elect Braxton has chosen the path of matrimony and can not be back to lead the team on to the victories that we surely expect to win. His absence at the pivot position will be keenly felt. Likewise, we suffer by not having John Smith on the line.

Of the letter men who are back we have Kirkland, Hiatt, McNeill, Harrell, Newman, Richardson, Alexander, and Parkerson, backfield men; Jones, Alston, Brown, Macauley, in the line. There are also several new men on the squad who were members of the squad last year. They include “Monk” Alexander, Greene, Foster, “Wicker and Paul Braxton. All of these men are well remembered for their work in seasons past, some as members of last year’s team and some as members of our 1923 team. Kirkland and Alston are playing their fourth year. Harrell and Richardson are playing their third year and the others of the letter men are in their second year.

Of course, the team is yet in its embryo state, but a look at some of the new men on the field seems to indicate that there will be a sprinkling of new faces on the varsity eleven before the season has progressed very far. Indeed, we are very fortunate this year in having a better line-up of new material than Elon has ever had before, and we are all well acquainted with the fact that Coach Corboy is a genius at developing areal Maroon and Gold warriors out of new material.

Coach is not prepared to make any definite statement as to the prospects of putting out a winning team but those who know him best are of the opinion that he is fairly well pleased with the prospects, and that speaks a lot for those same prospect.
