Frank Edmondson Explains Why Some Schools Have 6-Month School Year, Sept. 17, 1925

Auditor Issues a Statement

Mr. Frank Edmondson of Raleigh, state auditor, spent Thursday afternoon in Statesville in conference with Miss Celeste Henkel, county schools superintendent, regarding certain details of the work. In the matter of finances, Mr. Edmondson made the following statement:

“The board of education is not required to run the high schools of the county beyond the six months term unless the districts have special tax funds sufficient for the extra two months.

“If the money is not so furnished and placed to the credit of the districts running beyond six months, the county superintendent will be forced to close the schools when the funds have been exhausted. The board of commissioners will not be expected to furnish the money to operate beyond a six months term and when county and state funds and local tax funds are exhausted, the schools will be required to close. No district must overspend its funds for the year. That is not only the law, but is fair and just to all the schools if the county.

“When any special tax district in the county overspends its fund, the county superintendent and the board of education are liable for this.”
