Stanly News-Herald
The murder, mutilation and burning of a man near here Saturday night, thought to have been “Dad” Watkins, still remains an unsolved mystery, although energetic work by local officers is still going on. Wednesday afternoon the sheriff and deputies thought for a short while that they were on to something that would give them a clue, but it turned out a disappointment to them. Parties have been scouring the vast section north of the city, trying to find something that might amount to “a pointer,” but late Thursday morning the Sheriff’s office reported “No new developments.”
