Average Wages in 1910
According to U.S. Department of Commerce and Labor statistics,
in 1910 a common laborer in Massachusetts earned an average of 28 cents an
hour. In Richmond, Va., he was paid 18 cents an hour. The average common
laborer made 11 cents an hour in North Carolina; 9 cents an hour in South
Carolina, and 7 to 9 cents in Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi.
