Confederate reunion at Asheville Oct. 26, 27, 28.
Miss Susie Ship is now at 149 East Rock Road, New Haven,
Conn.
Mrs. Monroe Warburton is visiting Mr. and Mrs. Sheal in
Charlotte, the former her brother.
Miss Pattie Monroe and Grace Pemberton Coppedge left today
for Jackson Springs to spend 10 days.
Walter Warburton, working with the Christian Press at
Durham, spent the first of the week here at home.
Hector Little, Richmond county’s famous barbecue, cooked a
barbecue for 1,500 people at Norwood last Saturday.
Mrs. W.F. Morgan and young son, of Monroe, spent from
Thursday to Sunday with Mrs. J.W. Stephenson.
Mr. L.J. Harvard and daughters, Misses Ruth and Donavia, and
Mrs. Hollis Mills spent Sunday in Stanly county.
Steam shovel is digging today in front of the McPhail
residence on Everett street. Laying the concrete on North Washington is still
held up on account of delay in getting material.
Gen. W.A. Smith’s car was recently side-swiped by another
car near Charlotte and damaged to the extent of $150. Fortunately, neither the
General nor any of the occupants were injured.
Mr. J.D. Horne of Wadesboro and Mr. William H. Doroner spent
Sunday with Mr. J.W. Currie at Gibson’s Mill.
Mrs. W.A. Poplin and children and Miss Pauline Bennett are
spending this week with Mrs. Poplin’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Currie.
Miss Ruth Blalock left Monday morning for her home in Hamlet
to enter school after spending the past month here with her sister, Mrs. Ethel
Whitlock.
“Cyclone Mack” read the following telegram at Lincolnton a
few nights ago: “First Baptist Church, Rockingham, praying for great revival.
Bruce Benton, Pastor.”
Miss Myra Ormond of this place and Miss Jeddie May Bristow
of Fairmont left here Wednesday night for Thomas, West Virginia, where they
will teach in the city high school.
Guests of Mrs. J.W. Stephenson for several days last week
were Mr. and Mrs. R.A. Hudson of Weddington, Mrs. Sydner Grier and son of
Providence and Miss Margaret Loftin of Mt. Olive.
Mrs. Monroe Warburton and Mr. Herbert Terry, Miss Blondie
Shaw, Mrs. Hattie Thomas and two children motored to Lakeview Wednesday,
returning Thursday, having entertained nine blowouts en route.
Mr. J.A. Hutchison and two children and Mr. J.J. Bennett and
family returned Monday from a trip to Western North Carolina. They went by auto
as far as the Tennessee Line, spending some time in Asheville.
Six white robed figures of the Klu Klux Klan walked down the
aisles of the “Cyclone Mack tent at Lincolnton a few nights ago and presented
him with a check for $150 and a letter pledging their support in the clean-up
campaign.
William Hamer left Monday for Raleigh to enter State
College.
Miss Johnsie Cameron returned Saturday from 10 days spent at
Lakeview.
S.F. Croft, now of Burlington, and Paul Yountz of Charlotte
spent Sunday here.
Mrs. Harry Levin is spending a few days in Jackson Springs
with her house guest.
Miss Sue Covington, clerk in the Charlotte post office, is
visiting relatives in the county.
Mr. Max Levin has gone to the Northern markets to buy goods
for the New York Bargain House.
Four new army trucks passed through the city this afternoon
en route from Camp Bragg to Columbia.
Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Towson of Washington will arrive tonight
to spend two weeks with Mrs. Stella Cameron.
Miss Mary Louise Everett will return Saturday night from two
weeks spent in Warsaw with Miss Martha Best.
Mr. and Mrs. Chas.
Pearl and Misses Sadie Statim and Sadie Goldstein are the house guests
for a few days of the Levins.
H.M. Goodwin of Rocky Mount came here Tuesday to spend two
weeks with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.N. Goodwin.
It will be good news to the football fans of the community
to know that Loyd Jenkins intends returning to the Rockingham school this
session.
Another gulley washer last Saturday afternoon. The electric
current was again put out of business, but Manager Egerton had the proper
connections made within the hour and lights on again.
J.E. Haywood left Sunday for Baltimore and New York on a 10
days’ business trip. Mrs. Haywood and children accompanied him as far as
Charlotte and are spending the week with Mr. and Mrs. H.W. Weeks, the latter a
sister of Mr. Haywood.
Mr. and Mrs. Lin Dowdee and children will come from Durham
Saturday to spend the week-end with the E.B. Terry Jr. family. Mr. Terry and
family, and the Dowdees will go Monday to Durham where Mrs. Terry and children
will visit for 10 days, Mr. Terry going on to the Northern markets.
Miss Bettie Henderson left Sunday for her home in
Hendersonville, after spending several weeks with Mrs. P.S. Long. Mrs. Long and
two children accompanied her home. Mrs. Long will spend some time in Asheville
visiting her people. Mr. Long will join them the last of the week. They expect
to return through the country next week.
The Episcopal church at Wadesboro is closed during the month
of September. The rector will hold services in Christ Church Cathedral, New
Orleans, during his absence.
Ralph Thomas spent Saturday until Tuesday here with his
mother. He has been at the Methodist Orphanage at Raleigh for the past 3 ½
years, and will be in the 11th grade this fall. He is strong and
sturdy, plays on the school football team and is a likely looking young chap.
Mrs. U.S. Jones and nephew Howard have been visiting Mrs.
C.J. Jones and Mrs. Hattie Thomas.
The paper is in receipt of a Keiffer pear from Mrs. S.T.
Morse that weighed 22 ounces.
The altar guild of the Episcopal church will take orders for
nice khaki book bags. Price 40 cents. Give orders to Mrs. Howard Hartzell.
Mrs. Rufus Howard and daughter, Mathile, will arrive here
tonight (Thursday) from Savanna for 10 days’ visit to her mother, Mrs. J.W.
Leak.
Announcement cards have been received by friends announcing
the marriage of Walter Ward Payne on September 2nd at St. Louis, to
Miss Paula Helena Fritsch.
Miss Eleanor Smith of Gastonia came Tuesday to visit Miss
Sudie Jenkins. The two will return to Converse college, Spartanburg, next
Monday for the ensuing term.
Henry Grant writes the paper under date of August 30th
from San Francisco on board the battleship Oklahoma that he will be discharged
from the navy on September 4th.
D.L. Coppedge and family and Ralph Hutchison and family left
here in their Fords Saturday morning for the mountains, going as far west as
Asheville and returning to Rockingham Monday night.
The following motored to Lincolnton Sunday morning to hear
“Cyclone Mack,” and returned Monday afternoon: Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Leak and
Pattie, Mrs. W.T. Covington and Mrs. Joe Stephenson.
Miss Meriel Groves spent from last Thursday until this
morning with Mrs. B.F. Reynolds. She left today for Mt. Airy where she will
teach this coming year in that school which opens next Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. Dan Wicker several weeks ago moved into their
pretty new bungalow on Watson Heights. The dwelling has seven rooms, is painted
white, with green roof and gables, and a red cement floor porch is now being
built.
Rev. A.I. Ormond came home Monday night after an absence of
three weeks. He visited at Connelly Springs, Hillsboro and Ayden, staying about
two weeks at the latter place with his mother, Mrs. Jennie Ormond. Mrs. Ormond
Sr. will be 84 years old next March 1st.
R.A. Hines came from Schoolfield, Va., Tuesday to spend two
weeks in the country with relatives. He is the son of Mr. Mallie W. Hines.
Miss Elizabeth Everett returned Tuesday night from Memphis,
where she spent the summer with her Dockery relatives.
Tyler Bennett, whose parents formerly lived here but now
reside in Wadesboro, spent the week-end here with friends. He left Monday for
Raleigh to enter State College, taking a textile course. For the past eight
months he has been doing practical work in a Gastonia cotton mill.
Mr. J.W. Lentz of Ellerby expects to go to Davenport, Iowa,
sometime this month to visit his daughter. Mrs. W.H. Olive, and have his
deafness treated at the Chiropractic college. Mr. and Mrs. Olive have been at
the college for the past 12 months studying and will complete the course and
become Chiropractors next March.
Miss Helen Long arrived in Rockingham Sunday morning from
Highland Nature Camp, North Sebago, Maine, whither she has been during the
summer as Camp Counsellor. Miss Long will be with her mother, Mrs. Bettie
Flowers Long, until Oct. 1st, when she will go to Baltimore to take
up the same line of work.
On Thursday evening of last week Mrs. M.H. French
entertained with a charming moving picture party in honor of her house-guests,
Misses Madaline Hastings and Corrine and Edwina Rowe of Bennettsville. Guests
met at the residence of Mrs. French and went to The Garden where they enjoyed a
beautiful picture. Afterwards all when back to the home, where Mrs. French
served ice cream and cake. Sweet music was enjoyed after refreshments. Invited
were Alllison Ormond, Toots Causey, Harry West, Ammie Webb, Glenn Garrett, Hary
Fowlkes, Misses Minnie Bonner Guthrie, Ray Covington, Mary Little Steele,
Margaret Terry, Juanita Taylor, Misses Corrine and Edwins Rowe, and Madaline
Hastings.
Mrs. L.A. McCall of Florence will arrive Friday for several
days’ visit to Mr. and Mrs. Marshall French, the former her brother.
Mrs. A.G. Corpening entertained this (Thursday) afternoon at
a very delightful bridge party honoring Miss Altie Corpening of Statesville,
sister of Mr. Corpening, whose engagement was announced last week in
Statesville by her sister, Mrs. Furches. Four tables for Bridge were arranged
in the living room and hall, where vases of summer flowers were used in
decorating. After the usual round of progressions, the game was called off and
the hostess served a salad course with accessories to Miss Alice Corpening,
Mesdames C.P. Steward, J.M. Ledbetter, Jake Hinson, Howard Hartzell, Isaac
Lendon, Billy Everett, Frank Leak, T.C. Leak, Russell Ford, Morris Purvis,
Willie Folkes, Mial Leak, J.A. Lambeth, Miss Mary Entwistle, and Miss Dee
Stewart of Tacoma, Washington.
Mrs. J.T. French of Wilmington, who has been the house guest
of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall French, returned to her home Thursday.
Miss Mary Goodrum of Newman, Ga., who arrived in New York
Sunday a.m. on the Laconia from Liverpool after a tour of Europe, is in the
city with Mr. and Mrs. John Armistead for a brief visit before returning to her
home in Georgia.
Miss Rosa Steele returned to Rockingham Wednesday night from
Detroit, Mich., whither she spent 10 weeks with relatives and friends. She
returned home by way of the Great Lakes, points in Canada, Niagara Falls and
New York. She was joined in Detroit by Miss Mary Todd Armistead, who made the
return trip as far as Washington City with Miss Steele.
Miss Elma Warbuton spent several days this week in Charlotte
as the guest of Mrs. J. Scholl.
Misses Frances Hicks of Biscone and Ermine Baldwin of Mt.
Gilead are guests this week at Mr. and Mrs. Frank Leak’s.
