One of the Navy's temporary auxiliary ships, the Sagadahoc made four trips delivering goods to France during World War I. After she was decommissioned, she was used by various American shipping companies. In 1941 she was stopped at sea by a German submarine while sailing from New York to South Africa. The Germans searched the ship, found contraband and ordered the crew into lifeboats. Then they torpedoed the Sagadahoc. Crew members were rescued several days later, with one casualty.
