Dexter Forbes, a young farmer of Mamie, Currituck County, and his wife miraculously escaped serious injury when a Ford couple driven by Forbes at a terrific speed left the road on a curve near Currituck C.H., turned a somersault and smashed into the roods by the side of the road. The car was badly smashed and both Mr. and Mrs. Forbes were badly bruised and shaken up.
One eyewitness says that Mrs. Forbes had climbed out of the car and was on the running board of the machine when it left the road, which probably explains her escape from serious injuries or death. Forbes is said to have been under the influence of liquor, which may explain his escape, since the Lord is reputed to have a special concern for fools and drunkards.
Forbes has a reputation of being a reckless driver and is said to have tried to break his own record on this occasion. He was driving so fast when he passed Coinjock, it is said, that his wife was then crying, wringing her hands and begging him to have a care. Near Maple, about two miles from Currituck C.H., the Ford refused to take an easy curve and landed in the big timber by the side of the road after doing a flip.
