Julian Newbern Manslaughter Case, Sept. 14, 1923

Newbern Case to Be Aired Tomorrow

The case of State vs. Julian Newbern on a charge of manslaughter is to be given an airing tomorrow in Recorder’s Court, in an endeavor to fix the guilt for the automobile accident on the night of Tuesday, August 11, when Newbern wrecked his car on the Weeksville road, killing three companions, and inuring himself and Wallace Miller, 20-year-old boy of this city.

Newbern was not seriously injured and got out of the hospital in a few days. Miller’s condition was more serious and he was not able to get back to work until a week ago. One man, J.L. Barrett of Edenton, was instantly killed; Joe Abbott of Norfolk died a few minutes later, and John Seymour of this city lived (rest of story is unreadable).
