Mount Holly, Dec. 28—since the death of Major W.A. Graham, prominent North Carolina citizen and statesman, it was learned today that one of his old slaves was found to be still living in the town of Mount Holly. Albert Bright Graham is his name, and his age is somewhere in the 70s. This negro says that he was owned by the Graham family at Hillsboro.
When the late Major Graham came to Lincoln county to live he brought Albert with him along with scores of other slaves. Since that time he has lived in this section of the state, and for the last 25 years he has made his home in Mount Holly where he has been in the employ of C.E. Hutchison, well known capitalist. The negro tells some interesting stories of all members of the famous Graham family. He states that he had done house and farm service for various Grahams since boyhood. He is now getting old and feeble, has a large family, and is popular in Mount Holly with both white and black.
From The Lincoln County News, Lincolnton, Monday, January 7, 1923. The Emancipation Proclamation was made by President Lincoln during the Civil War on September 22, 1862. It went into effect on January 1, 1863. If Albert Bright Graham was 70 years old when this story was published, he would have been born a slave, and about 9 years old when the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect.
