Bentonville Township Forest Fire Under Control, April 8, 1924

Forest Fire in Bentonville

One of our reporters sends us information of a disastrous forest fire in Bentonville Township. The fire started about April first and burned for three or four consecutive days, covering over some 300 or 400 acres of land and doing great damage to timber and fuel. It had its origin from a fire that was started in a farmer’s field, the farmer doing some hedying. The main part of the old battlefield was swept over by this fire, which at the last of the week was reported to be under control, having run its course.

From the front page of the Smithfield Herald, April 8, 1924. Not sure what hedying is.
