Edenton, April 14—One of the mystery things that has happened to Edenton is the terrific explosion that occurred just before noon on Tuesday, threw a mule and man to their knees and was heard at M.G. Brown’s lumber mill, and the discovery of a large mass of metal, resembling a large motor armature, which was dug up 12 inches from the surface in a field 200 yards back of Tom Taylor’s home on West Queen street.
Tom Taylor, a reliable colored man, was plowing in a field at the side of his home on West Queen street when, about 11:30 Tuesday morning, a loud report resembling the blast of dynamite exploding under stumps, although much heavier, was heard and shook all the residences in the neighborhood and threw Tom Taylor and his mule to the ground. When the latter recovered, he tried to find where the explosion came from, for he had heard nothing previously, such as the whirr of an airplane, and later, when fully recovered from the shock he started plowing again.
At the end of the row, he discovered the deep hole the missile had made and, digging it up, found a mass of metal, which resembled an armature of a motor.
That ends the story. It is unexplainable, except that Tom Talor said that some men from the east side of town assured him they heard the whirr of an airplane motor about 11 o’clock that morning.
