Nell Orr, Ruth Voncannon Hurt When Struck by Car, March 5, 1924

Elon Students Hurt When Struck By Car. . . Two Young Women Painfully Injured; Driver of Offending Machine Does Not Stop

Misses Nell Orr of Denton and Ruth Voncannon of Asheboro, members of the Elon College Freshman Class, were painfully but not seriously injured Sunday afternoon about 5:30 o’clock when a small touring car driven by J.D. Rumley, which was passing them as they walked beside the highway, was struck by a heavier car, the smaller machine turning over on the young women.

The driver of the large car, which was moving at a terrific rate of speed, did not stop. Dr. W.A. Harper, president of the college, returning to Elon from Burlington, met the machine near Burlington. While he did not know of the accident, he and other members of the party in his car spoke of the speed of the car.

The young women, popular members of the Freshman Class, together with a number of other students, were walking along the highway back of the campus. They were off the paved part of the road, on the dirt embankment. Mr. Rumley’s car, moving east, was struck by the heavier machine, also moving east, as it was near the young women and thrown off the road. None of the students were struck except Misses Orr and Voncannon. While they were painfully injured, no bones were broken and they are resting well. It was not necessary for them to be taken to a hospital.

Burlington police were informed of the accident and are looking for the driver of the cr which smashed into Mr. Rumley’s car.
