Poke Bonnet Obscured Vision of Pedestrian, April 12, 1924

POKE BONNET

Hit by Auto, Aged Woman May Die

Unable to see or hear well and with her vision obscured and hearing impaired beyond normal by a poke bonnet, Mrs. Pollie Russell, 75 years old, while walking in the middle of the Newland paved road between the Norfolk-Southern railroad and Knobbs Creek bridge, was struck by an automobile driven by Mrs. J.L. Tuttle, Saturday morning at about 8 o’clock, and I tis feared that her skull is fractured. She is in a semi-conscious condition at the home of her son, Claude Reife, on North Road street extended.

Mrs. Tuttle, who lives in the Corinth community, about 2 ½ miles from town, was driving a Ford roadster toward town at a very moderate rate of speed while Mrs. Russell seems to have been walking in the direction of the bridge. The body of the car passed the aged woman safely, according to reports, but she was struck by the rear fender after the machine had gone by her, suggesting that she inadvertently walked into the moving automobile.
