William Little, negro youth who declares his age to be 15, was given a hearing before Judge W.H. Young in juvenile court Saturday morning and bound to superior court in bail of $1,000 to answer for the murder of Genne Stone, negro, several weeks ago.
Judge Young was not satisfied with the age that the negro boy gave, and school records are said to show that he is above 15 years of age. Probable cause was found by the court.
When Little started out on Friday evening, March 28, “to have a big time” he took a revolver with him to add to the zest of the evening. he told the court Saturday morning that the shooting of Stone followed “some words” that the two passed while on Pine street near the city stables about 9 o’clock. Little, it was testified, dared Stone to take a few steps up the street. Stone made the move and, according to Little, came back and struck him. Little fired.
After lingering in the hospital for several days, Stone died, an abdominal wound proving fatal.
From page 2 of the Sunday Durham Herald, April 13, 1924. The victim’s first name was spelled Genie in the headline and Genne in the text of the story. I don’t know which is correct.
