Mary Lee Byerly Home for Orphans to Close, July 20, 1924

Children from Mary Lee Byerly Home Will be Placed Next Week

After taking charge of the children who have been staying at the Mary Lee Byerly Home, officers of the juvenile court are now engaged in finding places for them. A number of the children will be sent to Oxford Orphanage, and still others will be sent to their homes, all of the children, however, will remain at the home until Tuesday, when it is hoped final arrangements for caring for them will have been made. Mary Byerly took the dissolution of her home very philosophically, as was necessary through the nature of the case, and is aiding the court in getting all the children settled.

The breaking up of the home came through the action of the state welfare department in refusing to renew its license. The only part in this acting which was taken by the juvenile court of the county was to see whether the children were living under the proper conditions or not, and to take charge of them if they were not. On finding this to be the case, the court tried to get the negroes of the city interested in backing the home, so that it might continue its work here. However, the officers got very little encouragement from these citizens and found it necessary to discontinue all plans for the fostering of the home in its present state.
