The Carolina Motor Club is endeavoring through the State Highway Department to establish uniformed State Police to patrol the Highways of the State for the purpose of enforcing the laws against reckless driving and all violations of motor traffic regulations. The only way that North Carolina can have a strict and impartial enforcement of the motor traffic laws is through the agency of a uniformed State Police.
Chairman Page and Commissioner Doughton are giving the matter careful consideration and seemingly the only obstacle in the way is a financial one.
It is to be hoped that some way can be found to establish State Police for our highways. It is the one way to make our highways safe for the law-observing motorist.
One more thing is needed in addition to State Police to safeguard motorists on our highways and that is a law compelling every person who drives a car to obtain a driver’s license which may be revoked upon a serious violation of the motor traffic laws and regulations.
The establishing of a body of State Police would be a great benefit, but it would be far better to adopt the driver’s license along with the State Police. Then the motorist would have real protections against the reckless and incapable driver, and the number of accidents would be greatly reduced. It is to be hoped that North Carolina will have both of these measures in operation before many more months go by.
