The people of Anson county are familiar with the circumstances of the crime committed by Jim Collins, for which he suffered the death penalty last Friday. After a dispute with Mr. A.C. Sedberry over a small amount of money which Collins claimed Mr. Sedberry owned him, but which Mr. Sedberry said had been used up in getting medical treatment for Collins, Mr. Sedberry knocked the negro down, and went on about his business of scraping the road. Collins went to a house and got a gun which was taken away from him by friends, then went back and got a pistol, slipping up behind Mr. Sedberry and shooting him in the back. He was captured after a sensational chase.
Collins is the first Anson county man who has died in the electric chair. Although several have been convicted of first degree murder since the stated started putting to death by electrocution, all have escaped heretofore, either through new trials or through commutation. The last man who suffered the death penalty in this county was Will Boggan, colored, who was convicted some 25 years ago of the murder of Mr. John Sullivan. Boggan was convicted largely on general principles and circumstantial evidence, and there has always been considerable doubt as to his guilt.
