Kohler Holtsclaw Sentenced to Death, July 21, 1920

Death Sentence Given Kohler Holtsclaw

Newton, July 23—Yesterday afternoon about 5 o’clock Judge McElroy sentenced Kohler Holtsclaw to be electrocuted on September 21 next. Holtsclaw was found guilty of murder in the first degree Tuesday evening. The crime for which he is to forfeit his life occurred on December 29 when he shot and killed John W Gabriel at Terrell, Catawba county, the story of which the readers of the Record are familiar. The date set for the electrocution falls on the 25th birthday of the young man.

Counsel for the prisoner gave notice of appeal to the supreme court. After the judge had pronounced the death sentence, the prisoner wept.

John cook, white, has been on trial here since Wednesday morning on the charge of criminal assault on Mrs. Tom Smith, was acquitted by the jury yesterday afternoon, the jury having only been out a short time.
