Could 68-Year-Old Have Been Beaten for Marrying 14-Year-Old? Sept. 2, 1925

Think Elopement Cause for Attack. . . Former Richmond Officer Married 14-Year-Old North Carolina Girl

Richmond, Va., Aug. 30—The theory was being entertained by the Richmond police today that the recent elopement of Charles L. Butler, 68, ex-policeman, with 14-year-old Elizabeth Wiggins of Witnerham, Va., to Warrenton, N.C., may in some way or other have provoked an assault made on Butler by two men at his home in the East End a few nights ago, although the parents of the girl say that they had no objection to the marriage, which was performed in Warrenton August 14th.

The family is originally from that town, having moved to Viginia a few years ago. For a time the theory of robbery was entertained, but this has been abandoned, it developed today.

Butler was beaten almost into insensibility, according to the police. He first scouted the robbery theory, but is said to have claimed later that he was robbed of $18. His assailants, he said, were strangers.

Mrs. Butler was not at home at the time. A good description of the two men was furnished the police, but they have been unable to get any trace of them.

Butler married the 19-year-old sister of his present wife several yeas ago, this marriage resulting in a divorce in a year or two. He had been previously married to a Richmond girl who is said to have died some years ago. Butler retired from the police force 15 years ago and has since been employed at the city gas works. He and his bride of two weeks are apparently very happily mated, in spite of the great disparity in their ages.
