Editor of Watauga Democrat Praises Bob Taylor's Orchard, Oct. 14, 1925

A Visit to “Bob” Taylor’s Orchards on Boone Trail

Watauga Democrat

On Sunday, Oct. 4th, it was a pleasure of the Editor of the Democrat to visit the home of Mr. B.T. Taylor on the Boone Trail, some three miles from the crest of the Blue Ridge on the east side.

Everything about the place has a most inviting appearance, neatness and great care being exemplified everywhere you look. The short visit to the pretty home, snow white and nestling among the hills, where peace, plenty and prosperity reign, was much enjoyed. Another of the pleasant features of the visit was a trip through the famous Taylor apple orchards nearby, where hundreds of trees are loaded almost to the breaking point, with the choicest apples that rival in taste, side and beauty the famous northern and western varieties that are shipped to and sold in Boone at 10 cents each during the winter. The trees in the main are highly cultivated and the trees were sprayed six times during the season, accounting for the excellence of the fruit. The crop is now being gathered, Stark’s Delicious coming off first. They met with ready sale in his storage house at $3 per box. The wind falls were marketed at $1 per bushel.

His, is likely the most valuable property on the Highway between Boone and the Wilkesboros. To be sure, there is much expense and lots of hard work attached to it, but when the fruit is gathered the returns are fine. His fruit is known far and wide for its excellence, and he is always able to sell it for the high dollar. It is a treat to look at he smooth-bodied trees bending to the ground with a load that reminds one of a huge pile of perfect apples with a few leaves scattered over them.
