Jury Refuses to Annul Marriage of Janice Proctor and Lewis Boette, Oct. 17, 1925

Cupid Wins Out in Battle with Parents

Charlotte, Oct. 16—A jury in Mecklenburg Superior Court for trial of civil cases has returned a verdict declaring Miss Janice Proctor of Davidson capable of entering into a marriage state and declining to annul her marriage to Lewis Boette of Davidson, from whom her father and brothers, according to evidence presented in a hearing before Judge Lane last summer, took her forcibly as the wedding pair were returning from South Carolina.

The marriage took place last summer before a South Carolina justice of the peace. The parents of the young woman declared she was mentally incapable of entering the marriage state and assuming its responsibilities. A hearing before Judge Lane sought to have the marriage annulled on this ground. Several mental experts testified at the time. Judge Lane issued a restraining order which was to stand until the merits of the case could be decided by a jury.
