Asheville, June 18—Expressing confidence that the charge of immoral conduct brought against him as the result of an incident in Memphis, Tenn., recently, would be cleared up when the case is brought to trial before a tribunal composed of 13 ministers of western North Carolina on July 20, Rev. Dr. Ashley, pastor of the Central Methodist Church here, this afternoon issued a statement in which he declared he was innocent of the charges. His statement was as follows:

“In view of what has been published in the newspapers, I desire to say to my friends in Ashville and to the public in general that the happenings in Memphis were exceedingly unfortunate and embarrassing, but I am absolutely innocent of any purpose of wrong doing. When the whole truth is known, it will appear in a very different light and I feel sure the public will thoroughly understand my position. I therefore request everyone to be patient and sympathetic is cleared.”
