Surry County Extension Homemaker Achievement Awards, 1983

The Shoals Extension Homemakers Association won the Club of the Year Award when Extension Homemakers gathered in Mt. Airy for the 46th annual Surry County Achievement Program.
Pat Seal was named Outstanding Leader of the Year. In accepting the ward, an engraved silver tray, Mrs. Seal said, “When I think how easily I could have missed being an Extension Homemaker, it’s really frightening. Just think what I would have missed!”
A member of the Beulah EHA, Mrs. Seal has served as president of the Surry County Extension Homemakers Council for the past two years. She has served on most of the county committees, the Home Economics Advisory Committee, Northwest North Carolina Development Association board of directors and has presided at many county functions. She is the 1983 office of Northwestern District second vice president.
Reading awards went to 135 women who met the requirements of the county program. Library awards from the Northwestern Regional Library went to Grassy Creek and Good Neighbor EHAs for top honors with 100 percent participation, while Salem Fork was second.
Perfect attendance pins and certificates went to 161 homemaker for having attended all local EH meetings during the past year. The Busy Bees won the Gavel Award with 96 percent of teir members present for the 1982 awards program.
Dobson Early Birds EHA had the winning booth in the county fair and placed fifth in the Dixie Classic Fair. Mt. Airy’s Busy Bees placed second in county competition.
Entertainment for the evening was presented by Jack and Maggie Lauterer of Marion, well-known folk singers.
For the 31st year the award program was sponsored by the Mt. Airy Kiwanis Club. They served dinner to 250 homemakers and special guests, including our state president, Catherine Turner, and her husband, Charlie.
Juanita Gillespie received recognition as the Young Homemaker Delegate for the Northwest District to the Family Living Seminar. She was also the winner of the $25 leader lesson cash award.
Four Program of Work chairpersons were recognized for their participation in this year’s Public Awareness Tape Contest: Hurley Simpson, public relations; Nola Brown, housing, energy and environment; Hilda Moore, safety; and Retha Quesinberry, citizenship and community outreach. Mrs. Brown won third place in the national contest.
Bea Hall was announced the inner of the VEEP (Volunteer Extension Education Program) Award. Alice Cockerham won the Second Wind Award presented to a person for their contributions to their home, family, community, and Extension work.
Eleanor Powell, Woman’s Editor of the Mt. Airy News, was presented an engraved plaque from the Surry County EHA in appreciation of her support through the news media.
