Hubert Ray Holloman's 75-Gallon Still Out of Business, 1947

“Still Operator Nabbed on Scene” from the May 10, 1947, issue of the Statesville Record Landmark

Sheriff’s department officers yesterday cut down a big still in New Hope township, near Grassy Knob Church, and arrested Hubert Ray Holloman of Statesville who was found at the scene.

Deputies Wade Moore and Pressly Johnson, with Constable Staley Henderson, found the still operating full blast with three men at work. Two of the men, as yet unidentified, fled and escaped, but the officers nabbed Holloman, placed him under arrest and returned him to the county jail in Statesville. Hollowman made bond of $200, however, to await hearing.

The still, a 75-gallon capacity outfit, had just been started and a little whiskey run off, Deputy Moore said, when the officers closed in.
