Rowan County Votes on Establishment of ABC Stores, 1947

“Rowan Voting on ABC Stores” from the May 31, 1947, issue of the Statesville Record Landmark

SALISBURY, May 31—Rowan County voters today went to the polls to vote on legal state liquor stores after a spirited campaign between wet and dry forces.

Rowan would be the first county west of Durham to adopt alcoholic beverage control stores if the issue carries.

The vote was authorized by an act of the recent General Assembly.

The church league headed by the Rev. Archie Ellis of the First Baptist Church led the dry fight.
County election officials said the vote would be decided by a simple majority of ballots cast and that a majority of registered voters would not be necessary.
