“Two Murphy Lads
Drown” from the June 4, 1914, issue of the Western
Carolina Democrat and French Broad Hustler,
Hendersonville, N.C.
Murphy, May 29—A
very sad accident occurred here yesterday afternoon about 4 o’clock when Wade
Fain and Don Christopher, 11 and 12 years of age, sons of A.A. Fain and N.C.
Christopher, were drowned in the Hiawashee river below the L. and N. railroad
trestle.
The little Fain boy
was drowning when the Christopher boy went to his rescue.
After diving and
dredging the river for two hours and a half their bodies were found very near
where they went down in water 18 to 20 feet deep.
