“Pfc. Louis Hayes Missing in Korea” by Rob Rivers, August 17, 1950, The Watauga Democrat, Boone, N.C.

Pfc. Louis R. Hayes, 25-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Roby Hayes of Sugar Grove, has been reported missing in action in Korea since July 25, according to a telegram received last week by his parents from the Secretary of the Army.

Enlisting in the service in the spring of 1948, young Hayes took basic training at Ft. Jackson, S.C., returned home on a short furlough, and then was assigned to the 5th Calvary company in Japan. The last letter received by his parents had been written from Japan and was dated July 12.
