Lynchers Avenge Policeman’s Death. . . Dead Body of Negro Found Hanging on Tree Near Palm Beach

Palm Beach, Fla., June 7—Following the death of J.N. Smith, policeman in Palm Beach yesterday, the bullet-riddled body of Sam Simmons, negro, early today was found hanging to a live oak tree on the county road, main Palm Beach thoroughfare. The officer was shot late Sunday night while he was investigating the movements of three negroes.

They suddenly pounced on him, grabbed his gun and shot him three times and escaped. Rewards totaling $1,000 were immediately posted.

Smith died at a hospital yesterday. His body today was sent to his old home in Staunton, Va.

Lynching of Simmons took place last night and at the coroner’s inquest it was found that he came to his death at the hands of persons unknown.
