Mrs. Mebane Hosts Madam Jonesco, June 11, 1923

Mrs. B. Frank Mebane

Madame Jonesco Heard at Spray

Mr. and Mrs. B. Frank Mebane entertained with a brilliant reception on Saturday afternoon in their home at Spray in honor of Madame Jonesco of Roumania, a visitor to the French embassy in Washington, who was their house guest for the week-end.

Guests from Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Danville and Martinsville, as well as those from Rockingham county, filled the stately rooms and halls.

Mrs. Mebane was assisted in receiving by Mrs. Harris of Danville, and Mrs. Lindsay Patterson of Winston-Salem. In the library Mrs. Wm. Harris Nelson and Mrs. A.G. Walters served punch during the afternoon.

Madame Jonesco, an attractive brunette, was presented in her native costume. Her missing to this country is in behalf of the orphans of Roumania of whom there are 700,000. She is an artist and an author of note. In collaboration with Queen Marie of Roumania, she has written a book on Byzantine Art which has been placed in many national museums. She is a personal friend of Queen Marie’s and brings from her to the American people a message so full of friendliness and appreciation that it makes very real to us this “most democratic of Queens and human of women.”

Madame Jonesco talked very appealingly on the subjects nearest her heart—her Queen and the Byzantine Art of which both are devoted students.

Saturday afternoon was one of the many occasions when the hospitable Mebane home has been the scene of distinctive gatherings to meet people of interest and note.
