Tornado, Hail Damage in Mecklenburg, Iredell, Davidson Counties, June 15, 1924

Mecklenburg, Iredell, Davidson Counties Suffer Damage from Storm

By the Associated Press

Charlotte, N.C., June 14—Damage estimated at many thousands of dollars was done in Mecklenburg and Iredell counties this afternoon by a tornado and hail storm that swept through a number of sections. A number of small houses were blown down but so far as could be learned no one was killed, the only known casualty was a negro woman who sustained a badly lacerated arm when her home near Dixie was destroyed.

The heaviest loss probably was sustained by farmers whose crops were ruined and telegraph and telephone companies. Several miles of wire were down between Charlotte and Gastonia. The Charlotte-Gastonia highway was closed tonight because of timber lying across it.

Reporters from Mooresville said considerable damage was done in the lower sections of Iredell county, wires being down, houses unroofed and crops damaged. No loss of life was reported.

Davidson also reported considerable damage.
