Not a Square Deal--Had White Man Killed the Negro, There Would Have Been No Electrocution, June 11, 1925

Says Collins Did Not Get a Square Deal

Monroe Enquirer

Jim Collins, the negro who killed A.C. Sedberry, Anson county white man, was electrocuted at the state prison last Friday morning. Collins said as his last words: “Since I came here, I’ve learned to read the Bible, and think I’m saved,” which at least is a little different from most men, when strapped to the chair, who are assured and maintain that heaven will be their home.

But there are many, including attorney General Frank Nash, who believe the little negro did not get a fair deal when he went to the electric chair. Sedberry, the sawmill man who was killed, evidently did the little negro a great injustice when he severely beat him and refused to pay wages when due. Collins saw red after he was humiliated before his fellows, and beside mistreated. But the colored man made the fatal mistake of going for a gun and shooting to death is employer—a white man. Had the white man killed the negro, there would have been no electrocution last Friday.
