If any child has school books with which he has finished and which are still in use in the schools, those children who are unable to buy them would greatly appreciate your giving them if you feel that you can do so. Please bring or send books for distribution to the welfare officer.
--Mrs. D.J. Thurston, Supt. Public Welfare
From the editorial page of the Smithfield Herald, Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1925. Public schools may have been free, but school books were not.
