Beckwiths Escape Fire with Nightclothes on Their Backs, April 10, 1922

Man and Family Have Close Call

Hamlet, April 8—The third fire in a week, emphasizing the old superstition about there being three fires in a row, occurred Thursday on the same hour and almost resulted in the death of J.L. Beckwith, his wife and little daughter. They escaped a few moments before the roof of their home collapsed.

Mr. Beckwith was awakened by the voice of his little daughter and by the shouts of neighbors about 1 o’clock, it is stated, Instantly, he was out of bed, awoke Mrs. Beckwith and hurried them to the window. He returned to get his clothes and the clothes of his wife and daughter, but the smoke and flames were too much. The next day a little Babbitt-like chunk of silver uncovered in the ashes marked the spot where his clothes had been and where the $80 in his pocket, except the silver, had disappeared.
