W.A. (Bud) Marshall, aged 60 years, was shot and almost instantly killed at his home in Granite Falls by his son, Fred Marshall, between 6 and 7 o’clock last night following threats of the father against his wife and other women in his household. The son shot five times with a pistol, four of the bullets taking effect and death occurring in five minutes. Bud Marshall, it was said, had been drinking and the son shot in self-defense.
The tragedy followed the Fourth of July celebration at Granite Falls yesterday, and was a shock to the whole community. Fred Marshall surrendered to Deputy Sheriff Payne, who carried him to the Caldwell jail at Lenoir where he was confined.
It seems that the elder Marshall came home prepared to handle the women folks in is family, and that Fred, aged 26, who lives close by, was called in to protect his mother. He found his father with a loaded shotgun and, according to report, the weapon was drawn on the son. The boy opened up with a pistol.
A report reached Granite Falls last night that Henry Dula, who for a number of years had been an employe of the Granite Falls Manufacturing Company, was found shot to death at a sawmill near North Wilkesboro. No details were received and it is supposed that Dula had gone to Wilkes to visit relatives.
