George R. Calvert a Suicide, July 19, 1922

George R. Calvert, Formerly Manager of Western Union at Asheville A Suicide

Asheville, July 18—George R. Calvert, aged about 43, an attorney of New York city, temporarily residing at 21 Bearden avenue, died at the Mission hospital today with a bullet wound in the head, believed to have been self-inflicted.

When member of the household heard a pistol shot at 11:45 this morning, they rushed to Mr. Calvert’s room to find him with a wound in the right side of the skull above the temple. At the hospital it was found that the bullet had penetrated the brain, although the wound was of a grazing character.

George Calvert was well known in Asheville and this section where he had many friends. He was manager of the Western Union Telegraph company’s office here for several years until 10 or 12 years ago when he went to Virginia to study law and later located in New York to practice his profession.

He married Miss Louise Smith, a sister of Dr. Elizabeth Smith.

Leaving Asheville, Mr. and Mrs. Calvert went to New York, where Mr. Calvert studied law and later practiced the profession.
