Fire that started in the kitchen while members of the family were at church service early last night practically destroyed the home of John Edwards on Holly street, near Herman. The loss, estimated, is about $300. Some of the furniture was saved but the damage to the building is irreparable.
A colored maid washing in the neighborhood saw the flames in the rear of the home and ran to the house to warn the occupants but discovered after several calls that everybody was away. She then ran to a neighbor’s and the alarm was turned in. In the meanwhile, the flames had spread throughout the roof and had completely enveloped the house.
The alarm was turned in about 8:30 last night and drew almost as many people as the tent meeting. A midday blaze, which also started in the kitchen, caused slight damage yesterday in the home of Mrs. Warwick on West Ashe street.
