Elizabeth City's Public Utilities Commission, March 21, 1923

Public Utilities Commission Is Named by City Council

P.C. Cohoon, M.P. Gallop, and S.H. Johnson were named to serve on the Public Utilities Commission at a called meeting of the City Council Tuesday night. P.C. Cohoon will serve for six years, M.P. Gallop four years, and S.H. Johnson two years. Every two years a new member will be appointed by the Council. The election of this Commission by the City Council was authorized by the last session of the General Assembly. The bill passed provides that each member of the commission shall receive a salary of not less than $100 annually and not more than $300. The councilmen at Tuesday’s meeting, however, took no action on the fixing the salary of members of the commission.

The Public Utilities Commission is to have charge of the building and maintenance of public utility plants for Elizabeth City. Their term of office begins on the first of May. The mayor is ex-officio chairman of the commission and meetings are to be held twice each month.
