Raleigh, N.C., Jan. 15—A recommendation that the Masonic orphanage at Oteen dispense with state aid was made here tonight by Grand Master Hubert M. Poteat of Wake Forest, at the opening session of the 137th annual communication of the grand lodge of North Carolina.
In his address Dr. Poteat pictured masonry as an opportunity for men to get way from the beaten path and render broad service to humanity rather than “certain ritualistic acts behind tiled doors and the giving of some pittance to charity.” The grand lodge hall in masonic temple was packed to overflowing by members of the craft from all sections of the state.
Dr. Poteat’s recommendation that the orphanage be taken entirely from the status of receiving state aid will be considered during this session of the grand lodge. The institution has received an appropriation for a number of years, the amount being as high as $30,000.
