Charlotte, Jan. 15—With an aggregate of 6,000 children in Mecklenburg county between the ages of 11 and 16, only 208 are working, according to figures made public here by the North Carolina state welfare commission, after an intensive survey of the county.
From the editorial page of the Durham Morning Herald, Jan. 16, 1924. This figure didn't include farm children, who were expected to work, because they were not paid for their work.
