Questions Arise Over Person Who Murdered Ernest Kennedy, Jan. 3, 1924

Peculiar Angle in Murder of Negro

Shelby, Dec. 28—A peculiar angle has developed around the murder near here Saturday of Ernest Kennedy, colored. Immediately following the killing, which was the result of a domestic wrangle, “Doc” Williamson, colored, came into town with the dead man’s brother, gave himself up and admitted he had killed Kennedy. Kennedy was killed about noon, and at an inquest that afternoon the coroner’s jury decided that the actual killing was not by Williamson but by his nephew, Roosevelt Young. At a hearing Monday both negroes were placed under a $500 bond each for Superior court on a murder charge.

It seems that some three weeks ago Kennedy ran off with Willliamson’s wife and returned for the first time Saturday. Williamson and Young, his nephew, en route to Shelby, heard of the return and proceeded to Ike Williamson’s where Kennedy was stopping. According to the dead man’s brother and other eye-witnesses, Kennedy and Williamson first started scuffling over a shot-gun and after it had bene broken Kennedy had Williamson on the ground administering blows, when Young walked up from behind and shot Kennedy through the head, killing him almost instantly.

Reports have it that Williamson had also shot several times although he did not hit Kennedy, and it is not known whether Williamson admitted the crime to shield his nephew or thought a bullet from his gun had killed the negro who had eloped with his wife.
