Stokes County Highway Commission Outlines Work on Roads, April 16, 1924

Work Prisoners on Stokes Road. . . Guards Were Employed Monday by County Highway Commission—Other Business Transacted by Board

At Monday’s meeting of the Stokes county Highway Commission Hobart Bennett and Jeff Smith were employed as guards to work prisoners sentenced at the recent term of Stokes Superior court. The prisoners will be used to build the proposed highway from Piedmont Springs to Moore’s Springs. They started work on this road today.

R.R. King was employed to remove a bridge from a creek near Pine Hall to the Terrell creek near Hartman.

Engineer N.S. Mullican was instructed to complete the surveys and select soil for the following roads: Sheppard’s mill road, Priddy road, Campbell to Francisco, Mt. View to Quaker Gap church. this was ordered done in order that farmers along the routes may know which land to put in cultivation.

some changes were ordered made in the Bethel road in Beaver Island township.

The county highway commission approved the road-building program as carried out by the Big Creek township highway commission. Repairs were ordered made to the road on the south side of Flat Shoal mountain.

The one mile trench of road lying between Clemmon’s Ford bridge and R.M. Smith’s was ordered repaired.

Some changes were ordered made in the Priddy road.
