???vell C. Ander, flagman on the Seaboard Airline Railway, is being tried in Raleigh for assault on Miss Ruth Oakley, orphan and self-help student at Chowan College. Anders enticed the young lady into the drawing room of a pullman coach, embraced the young lady forcibly and made improper entreaties of her, it is alleged. The attempted assault occurred on the train near Lexington, N.C., while the girl was enroute to visit friends after leaving school
From page 10 of The News Reporter, Whiteville, N.C., Thursday, June 11, 1925. The edge of the paper was torn so I can’t see the accused’s first name, but in this brief article, his last name was spelled “Ander” on first reference and “Anders” on second reference.
