Six Chadbourn Folks Going Through Pasteur Treatment for Rabies, June 11, 1925

Mad Dog Bites Six at Chadbourn

Chadbourn, June 10—Dr. W.F. Yates, E. Mellett, J.H Yates, Gerland Bryan, the small son of Ben Elliott, and a negro boy were bitten here last week by “Jiggs,” collie pet belonging to Mrs. W.F. Yates. All of those bitten are undergoing the Pasteur treatment [for rabies].

The dog had been acting strangely since last Thursday, but had been allowed to run at large. The first to be attacked by the dog was J.H. Yates who was snagged on the leg. Later the dog attacked the negro boy and chewed him up badly. Dr. Yates was bitten on the lip and three stitches were necessary to close the wound.

The dog was killed by town officials Monday, and the head sent to Raleigh for inspection at the State laboratory.

Reports received Tuesday reported rabies.

The dog was not killed at the first appearance of the disease because of previous inoculation with a serum said to immunize dogs from this disease.
